Words of gratitude
What they said

It's difficult to find the words to properly convey our level of gratitude for what you've just accomplished! We are beyond excited to start planning an unprecedented initiative — in the interest of helping every single student — more than 1,000. As you know, every single child in Dekpor is a disadvantaged child, living in extreme poverty. There is no doubt that Emajjin Children's Foundation will make a profound impact in Dekpor. You are helping underprivileged children who are desperately in need and who will appreciate all of the ways you enrich their lives! A heartfelt thank you for all you've accomplished and your beautiful generosity!

Carol Sheardown
Director, Dekpor School Development Organisation

We enjoyed very much your gala. We salute you and your team for working so hard in helping those underprivileged children around the world. Your donation is also an encouragement to our Foundation's effort and passion. Again, on behalf of these Nepalese orphans, thank you very much.

About the event
Pink Tie Affair

The sixth annual Emajjin Children's Foundation gala was held on November 3, 2019 at the Brighton Convention and Event Centre in Toronto. For the first time in our history, we chose two recipient charities — both Canadian-run organizations working passionately to support disadvantaged youngsters in our global village.

Every year, Emajjin chooses NPOs that are changing children's lives — organizations that intercede by providing items that may seem small but are in fact enormous: shoes for walking to school, toothbrushes for oral health, clean water for drinking, or simply a nutritious meal. Books to stir the imagination and impart knowledge that are out of reach for most. These organizations strive to be purveyors of opportunity — to give hope, and to break that devastating cycle of poverty.

The Pink Tie Affair brought together our most generous and spirited crowd yet, raising $45,000 across two extraordinary charities.

"To all of our generous sponsors, donors, guests and volunteers, a heartfelt thank you for 'emajjining' the possibilities with us. It's an honour to be on this journey with you."

About the charities
Two organizations. Two countries. One mission.
Primary recipient · $40,000
Dekpor School Development Organisation
Dekpor, Ghana

Daily life in Dekpor is challenging. The vast majority of people are extremely poor subsistence farmers. Many parents face impossible choices — between feeding their children and providing them with health care, basic essentials, and the goods necessary for an education. School fees, supplies, and uniforms must all be paid for in cash, creating a huge barrier. Many children never get the opportunity to go to school at all.

Since one of DSDO's directors lives in Dekpor, the organization works directly with local residents to best meet their needs and ensure all funds are used effectively. DSDO provides funding for clean water and sanitation projects, improved nutrition, sponsorships for children and educators, and education and health care projects.

Eyrie's mission is to enable less fortunate children in the developing world to realize their full potential by providing resources for education, medical care, and basic needs. Every year since 2011, it offers 115 scholarships to Moran Memorial School and 30 scholarships to St Xavier School in eastern Nepal — reserving 50% of all scholarships for female students to promote gender equality.

Emajjin's 2019 funds supported two orphanages in Kathmandu, with a two-year commitment of $10,000 ($5,000 per year) to the Foundation.

Update — February 2021
Emajjin funds Dekpor Health Week

Two years after the Pink Tie Affair, Carol Sheardown wrote to share the remarkable impact Emajjin's $40,000 had made in Dekpor — funding a full Health Week providing dental and vision care to the entire school.

Letter from Carol Sheardown, Director, DSDO

It is with great joy that I can let you all know that the medical attention sponsored by Emajjin Children's Foundation is a fait accompli! Health Week was a resounding success!

We are so grateful that over 800 students at Dekpor Basic School and staff were screened, benefited from educational sessions, and were treated. This was the second time, EVER, that students had a chance to be seen and treated by a dentist. It was the FIRST time for many of them to have their vision tested.

The things we take for granted are an amazing gift for the people of Dekpor. Emajjin Children's Foundation has made an incredible impact on the entire village and we can't thank you enough for funding this!
